Choose Your Circle, Choose Your Future
Have you ever heard the saying, "Birds of a feather flock together"?
It's a familiar phrase that raises attention on whether you're in the right flock.
As we grow in Christ, our appetites begin to change. The music we enjoy, the conversations we entertain, the places we spend our time, and even the friendships we cultivate may begin to look different. Sometimes those changes happen naturally. Other times, the Holy Spirit gently nudges our hearts and reminds us that something needs to change.
Perhaps you've found yourself praying, "Lord, I want to grow deeper in my relationship with You. What needs to change?" Scripture gives us wisdom for that very question: Amos asks, "Can two walk together unless they are agreed?" Proverbs 13:20 reminds us, "Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm."
Think about this. The people you consistently walk with are helping shape the person you are becoming. Who are you walking with? Are the people closest to you helping carry your burdens? Do they encourage you when you fall short? Do they lovingly hold you accountable? Are they praying for you, challenging you to grow, and pointing you toward Christ? Or are they pulling you away from the very life God is calling you to live?
First Corinthians reminds us not to be deceived because unhealthy influence has a way of spreading. Just as a little yeast works through an entire batch of dough, even small compromises can gradually shape our thinking, our priorities, and our choices. This does not mean we stop loving people who think differently than we do. It does mean we prayerfully consider who has the greatest influence in our lives.
Wisdom teaches us that not everyone should have the same level of access to our hearts. Whoever has your heart will often have your ear. Time does not determine loyalty. Alignment does. And the people who consistently influence your heart will often influence your future.
Today, ask the Lord to help you honestly evaluate your closest relationships. Do they align with where God is leading you? Are they helping you grow in wisdom, or are they quietly pulling you away from His best?
Daily Challenge
Take time this week to prayerfully evaluate your closest relationships. Write down the names of the people who have the greatest influence in your life, then ask yourself: Do these relationships consistently encourage me to love Christ more, pursue wisdom, and grow in obedience? Ask God to show you where you may need healthier boundaries, deeper community, or stronger accountability.
Prayer
Father, thank You for caring about the people I allow to influence my life. Give me wisdom, discernment, and courage to choose relationships that draw me closer to You. Help me recognize where changes are needed, and give me the grace to establish healthy boundaries with love and humility. Surround me with people who pray for me, encourage me, sharpen my faith, and faithfully point me toward Your truth. May my closest relationships reflect the purpose You have for my life and help me walk in wisdom each day.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
