Let the Fire Lose Its Fuel
Hearsay. Gossip. The tea. Assumptions. Sarcasm. Pride. Though they may seem small, each of these has the power to start a fire.
Left unchecked, they can ignite conflict in our homes, our relationships, our communities, and even within our own hearts.
Think about this. Most fires do not become destructive all at once. They grow because something keeps feeding them.
Proverbs reminds us that just as a fire goes out without wood, conflict often loses its strength when we stop supplying the fuel. Sometimes the greatest act of wisdom is not finding the perfect response; it's choosing not to add to the flames. So how do we break the cycle? We invite God's peace into our hearts, and then we practice it. Choose peace every chance you get. Declare that you are someone who walks in peace.
When someone irritates you or cuts you off on your way to work (we know...it gets real sometimes!), pray for them instead of speaking negatively.
When someone invites you into gossip, gently redirect the conversation.
When assumptions begin to form, choose curiosity over conclusions. Refuse to add wood to a fire that God is calling you to extinguish. Romans 12:18 reminds us, "If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone." While you cannot control the actions, attitudes, or words of others, you can choose how you respond.
Wisdom is often revealed in the moments when you could have escalated a situation but instead became a person of peace.
Today, let peace shape your words, your thoughts, and your decisions. And when choosing peace feels difficult, pause and ask the Lord to fill your heart with His presence. He is always faithful to supply the peace He asks us to live out.
Daily Challenge
Before responding to any frustrating conversation or situation today, pause for 10 seconds and ask yourself, "Will my words add fuel to the fire or bring peace to this moment?" Let your answer guide your response, and choose one opportunity today to intentionally redirect conflict toward peace.
Prayer
Father, thank You for calling me to be a peacemaker. Search my heart and reveal any gossip, assumptions, sarcasm, or pride that may be fueling conflict in my life. Help me remove the wood from the fire and choose the path of peace instead. Fill me with Your wisdom, guard my words, and let my conversations bring healing, encouragement, and life. May my responses reflect Your love and make Your peace visible everywhere You send me. In Jesus' name, Amen.
